When should I book my wedding cake?

Peak wedding season is May through October. Because we are a quality driven establishment, we only schedule a limited number of wedding cakes per weekend. If your wedding date falls within the peak season, we suggest you book 6 to 9 months in advance of your date. If your wedding occurs in the off-season, 3-4 months is sufficient.

Do you charge for wedding cake consultations?

Wedding consultations are complimentary. However, you are limited to one hour of our time. Should you need more time, our hourly consultation fee is $25.00. If you decide to book with us, that fee will be applied toward the purchase of your wedding cake.

Where and when are your consultations and tastings held, and do I need to make an appointment?

All of our meetings are by appointment only and are held in our studio in Columbia, MD.

Daytime hours:

Tuesday, Thursdays and Saturdays from 11:00 - 2:30.

Wednesdays and Fridays from 12:30 - 2:30.

Evening hours:

Wednesday - Friday between 6:00 and 8:00.

What happens at the wedding cake consultation?

During the consultation you will be given the opportunity to taste up to 4 personalized cake samples. We will show you a wedding cake catalog that includes pictures and wedding cake information. We will discuss the ideas and feel that you desire for your wedding so that the customized wedding cake of your dreams can be created. We are always happy to answer any questions that you have, and will produce a sketch and an estimate of your wedding cake, if requested.  Then if you are ready, you can book your cake at the end of your consultation.

How many people can I bring to the consultation and are children allowed?

You can bring up to three additional people to your tasting. Regarding children, if there is any way you can make arrangements for them, it may be best. We love children, however being the parents of young children, we know from experience how hard it is for them to sit quietly for 1 hour. We want you to have a great experience during your consultation, not a stressful one. Creating a wedding cake may be more involved than you might anticipate. Just ask, and we’ll be happy to send you home with a cake sample for the kids at the end of your consultation.

What if I am running late to the consultation?

Please call if you are running late, and we will let you know how tightly we are scheduled that particular day. If you are within a few minutes of your appointment time, it’s no problem. If you are going to be more than 15 minutes late, and there are no appointments after yours, you will only be allowed to use the remaining portion of your hour that was originally allotted to you. We may charge the $25.00 per hour consultation fee for appointments that go beyond their scheduled time.  If you need to cancel, please, out of courtesy, give us 48 hours notice.

Are we under any obligation to book the cake when we come in for our consultation?

No. You are under no obligation to book with us at your initial consultation. You may book if you want to, but we want you to feel comfortable with your decision.

Can we hold our date?

Yes, you can hold the date. In order to do so, you will need to fill out the wedding cake deposit form and put down a $100.00 non-refundable, non-transferable deposit (which goes toward the purchase of your cake).  Once you have decided on the design and flavors for your cake, a contract will be prepared for your review and signature.

Is there a minimum order for wedding cakes?

Yes and No.  There is no minimum size for a wedding cake, however there is a minimum purchase price of $225.00.

What if I have more people coming to my wedding than I expected? Will I run out of cake?

Most people get their final guest count approximately four weeks before their wedding date. At this time, you should double check the amount of servings your contracted wedding cake provides. If your guest count is more than your cake serves, then you may want to order extra servings.  This can be accomplished by ordering “kitchen cakes”. The kitchen cake is an extra cake that is brought to the kitchen of your reception venue. This cake will be constructed exactly as the tiers of your wedding cake with the same number of cake and filling layers. The difference is that this cake in undecorated. Once plated, kitchen cakes look exactly like the displayed cake. Please be sure to order your kitchen cake at least two weeks before your reception date.

Can I get a small display cake and then kitchen cakes for the majority of the servings?

Our policy is that your displayed cake must serve at least 100 persons or half or your guests (whichever is greater). You may not order more than 40% of the total amount of servings as “kitchen cakes”.

Can I get different cake and filling flavors for each tier?

Absolutely, this is your wedding cake, have fun with it.  Just keep in mind that if you order more than one flavor, your guests may feel compelled to eat more than one slice of cake. You may have to order more.

Can I bring in a picture of a cake that I have seen elsewhere?

Of course. We will be happy to review the picture that you provide and incorporate elements from it to make a unique design that is similar to the picture you have.

What is the pricing of your cakes?

Butter cream cakes start at $4.50 per serving and fondant cakes start at $6.00.  Exact pricing is based on the final design of the wedding cake.

Do you deliver and is there a delivery charge?

Yes we deliver all wedding cakes large and small for a fee.  This fee is based on distance to the venue from Columbia, MD and covers our time, fuel costs and set-up of the cake. Some cakes requiring elaborate set-ups (i.e. cupcake wedding cakes and cakes using multiple stands) may be subject to an increased setup and delivery charge. For small wedding cakes (2 tiers), you have the option of picking up the cake yourself. However, if you choose to do so, Simply Desserts will not be held liable for the damage to any cakes occurred after it leaves the shop in your care.  The best vehicles to use for transporting cakes are those with a flat bottom (i.e. minivan or SUV).  Please never transport a cake on the seat of a car or on the lap of a person.

How do I make my payments?

After making the initial deposit to reserve the date with cash, check, money order or credit card (Visa, Mastercard or Discover), final payments for all wedding cakes are due 2 weeks before the event date. You may pay in installments, if you wish using the methods mentioned above, but we will not accept checks after the 2 week deadline.

After you have an idea of what you would like, fill out the contact form me.

When should I book my custom cake?

If your event is on a weekend (especially during the peak wedding season from April – October), we suggest you place your order at least 2 – 4 weeks in advance since weekends often book up more quickly.  That way if we are completely booked with other orders, you will have enough time to place your order with someone else.
